Process Post: Talking to Coworkers About Nutrition‚ Energy‚ and Focus

For this process post‚ I don’t want to specifically focus on the online sources I was looking at․ I’m thinking beyond that for my inquiry question of how busy students can use nutrition to improve energy‚ focus‚ and performance‚ to how busy workers can use nutrition as well․ As part of my job at Newstone Group‚ I asked a couple of coworkers how their eating habits affected their day at work․

This helped me because our entire work environment was physical. We worked in a bricklaying factory‚ and there were trucks‚ machinery‚ brick saws‚ forklifts, and excavators everywhere․. So energy and focus are not just about feeling better‚ they are about keeping safe and doing a good job․

What I Asked

I asked my coworker Levi during work how he feels when he has breakfast and in compairason to when he’s unable to go for breakfast in the morning․ In the interview Levi said during not eating breakfast in the morning‚ his morning is longer‚ it takes him longer to feel fully awake‚ and he starts thinking about lunch too soon‚ so that he is not focused on the work he is doing․

I thought this was interesting because it shows that skipping breakfast affects not just hunger but also attention, mood, and how the morning feels. In a job where people have to be on their toes‚ it matters even more․

My second conversation was with my colleague George‚ and I asked him how he felt about bringing his lunch to work‚ such as when he had leftover food from his dinner‚ rather than getting it from Subway or McDonald’s․. He said fast food spikes his dopamine and is fun to enjoy during the 30-minute lunch break. But states the pleasure goes away when he is told to return to work‚ and his “empty calorie” food burns much faster, leaving him tired and hungry again. He also stated that fast food has different effects on him and that he could not tell the difference between having a stomach ache and being hungry․

So What?

These discussions helped me think about my inquiry question more practically․. Before this, I was mostly thinking about nutrition in terms of school‚ studying, and sports․. However‚ talking with my co-workers about food reminded me that similar effects occur in the classroom‚ at work with a computer‚ on the field‚ and while performing my manual job‚ which in turn affects my energy and concentration throughout the day․

This could also apply to distributed learning and online learning in which students may need to self-regulate their time-management processes․ In an online course‚ for instance‚ there is usually no schedule telling the student when to eat‚ take breaks‚ or refocus their attention․ That means nutrition becomes part of self-regulated learning․ Students are not only managing their assignments and screen time‚ they are also managing the habits that help them stay focused enough to learn․

From the perspective of education‚ nutrition matters not merely because of the impact on learning‚ but because learning is also a question of student readiness․. A student who is hungry‚ tired‚ or not eating healthy foods is not likely to have an alert mind for lectures and reading‚ and is less able to participate in online discussions․

Now What?

I don’t want my final product to sound like a perfect nutrition plan that only works for people with lots of time and money․. The ideal project will move in the direction of realistic options for people in my community․. Instead‚ I want to focus on simple habits that are actually realistic for busy students․

There are several areas I would want to study:

They are quick breakfast options for students with busy schedules in the morning․

meal timing and the effect on focus

Hydration‚ caffeine affect energy levels․

Simple lunch ideas are better than getting fast food.

Advice on scheduling meals around school‚ work‚ sports‚ and online learning activities

All these conversations with my coworkers opened my eyes to the importance of the topic of my inquiry․. Nutrition is not just about being healthy in a general way․. These changes can affect mood‚ attention‚ and performance throughout the day․. For students in online and distributed learning environments‚ establishing better habits around nutrition may be a critical aspect of developing independence and becoming an effective learner․
